GLOSSA GRIKA was born from the desire to contribute to the revitalization of Griko, the Greek language of Salento.

Given that first of all one has to speak a language, understand it, we mean, by writing in Griko, to encourage elderly people and adults, who can speak it, to continue to use it, in order to activate then among the youngest generations the will to learn it.

We think that the elderly people are the living source, the archive, of this language and young people certainly represent its future.

This site will publish articles, poems, songs, thoughts, etc. written in Griko and also recorded voices of Griko speakers.

For those who cannot speak or read Griko, some of these writings will be translated ¹ into Italian, Modern Greek, French, English.

Our initiative arises from the fact that a language is not only a means of communication but also a cultural reservoir.

Being aware of the different varieties of Griko, we decided to standardize the writing for consistency. You will find the Griko phonetics we propose on this table.

Since we rely on external participation (Griko needs everybody’s help) we would like future contributors to write by following the proposed way of transcription.

The site will certainly evolve.

We have already planned to put online a series of recordings of voices of Griko speakers.
